GSI Leads Industry in Using Automated System
(Reston, VA) Tango announced today a new contract
with General Services, Inc. (GSI), one of the largest freight handling
services in the country, to develop a wireless, turn-key, point
of sale system to capture data, instantly print receipts and invoices
at remote locations, and synchronize data with a central server.
Tango will also provide GSI, of Winchester, VA, with a centralized
database featuring a web-based front-end that allows easy administration
and reporting. The system will provide cost savings and increased
efficiency for GSI and their customers by ensuring information accuracy
and streamlining delivery of data to the central GSI accounting
system.
GSI provides freight loading and unloading services
at trucking terminals for a variety of commercial clients including
various Giant Food, Inc. locations. GSI’s president, George
Barlow, identified this market while operating his own fleet of
freight trucks. As the truck drivers were usually unable to assist
with the loading and unloading of freight due to liability issues
and union regulations, Barlow started to staff his regular loading
docks with his hired staff. Other freight carriers realized the
value of GSI’s services and contracted with GSI for their
handling. The endeavor has now grown into a company with over 500
employees and 30 locations dedicated to loading and unloading delivery
trucks.
As the company has grown, so has the need for
improved business processes. The system Tango is building will enable
accurate and reliable transactions at the docks and immediate capture
of all relevant invoice and receipt data. This information will
be captured via PDA and will include: items and quantity delivered,
time of delivery, cost of loading or unloading and names of individuals
who handled the freight. Invoices and receipts for the loading and
unloading services will be printed on site at delivery.
This system will eliminate GSI’s paper
method that requires the freight handlers to mail or carry the work
records back to the central office where the data is entered manually
into the accounting system.
“I’m very excited that GSI will be
among the first companies in this industry to use an automated wireless
system,” said Barlow. “This will give us a full and
accurate picture of our role in freight handling and provide us
with a competitive advantage over other loaders and unloaders. We
chose Tango based on their expertise in the wireless point of sale
market. We expect the system to begin providing us with a return
on investment as soon as it is operational,” said Barlow.
Tango has already produced a prototype graphical
user interface for the PDA portion of the application.
“Wireless technologies have been used for
years to track packages for delivery. This system extends to tracking
labor for loading and unloading freight,” said Scott Butler,
President, Tango Enterprises. “We are pleased to be able to
help GSI operate more cost effectively and improve customer service.
This project will be fully operational within 75 days of the start
date in late March,” said Butler.
